Mazda MX-5 Monaco
The
Monaco is based on a standard 1600cc model and was named
after the famous race circuit around the streets of Monte
Carlo. Only 450 units were made between May 1996 and January
1997 and cost £13,750.00 when purchased new
This
special version was finished in British Racing Green
and sported 15" alloy wheels and a tan coloured
convertible roof

The
interior was standard equipment as used in the 1.6 base
models and in car entertainment was provided using a Clarion
ARB 017E radio/cassette unit with removable front panel

This
car was basically a 'no frills' package and built without
the normal refinements and upgrades in order to keep production
costs and selling prices to a minimum
It's
thought that Mazda UK released this limited edition to
try and divert attention away from the then newly released
MGF. The Monaco was actually priced at £2,645.00
less than the cheapest MGF

The
1600cc engine was however a welcomed return and helped
to reduce increasing insurance prices whilst maintaining
lower running costs. The new 1600cc engine produced 88bhp
which was 26bhp lower than when the car was first released
in 1989
The
new 88bhp engine delivered a 0-62mph in 10.6 seconds while
maintaining a very healthy 42.2mpg at a steady 56mph
